In Case You Missed It: Question 1-Town Hall Forum

“We’re not going to charge some people.”
Citizens asked to “inconvenience themselves,” like going to DMVSteve Wolfson, Clark County District Attorney

Selective Enforcement

Steve Wolfson, Clark County DA: “We’re not going to charge people for lending a weapon to a friend. We’re going to charge people who have a real criminal intent.”
Audience question: “If we aren’t going to charge people, why are we passing a law outlawing that activity?”
Steve Wolfson: “I didn’t say we’re not going to charge people. I said we’re not going to charge some people.”

Unenforceable Without Gun Registry

Audience question: “If you were to pull me over and find I have a firearm, how would you determine that I had violated this statute?”
Stavros Anthony, Las Vegas City Councilman: “Um, I hadn’t thought about that? So, how would I know that you had passed the background check in order to own that weapon? I don’t know.”
Answer:  A 2013 memo from the Obama Justice Department makes clear, the only way to enforce a so-called universal background check law is with a gun registry.

No impact on violent crime

Stavros Anthony, Las Vegas City Councilman: “If I want to give a weapon to a friend of mine as a present, if this passes, I’ve got to do a background check on this friend of mine! Why should I be forced to do that? This is somebody I’ve known for 20 years and now I’ve got to go down to a gun store and do a background check on them. That sounds ludicrous to me! There’s no impact on violent crime.”

As Inconvenient as Going to the DMV

Steve Wolfson, Clark County DA: “You’ve got to go to the DMV to register your car. You’ve got to go to the DMV to get a driver’s license. All those things. Does it take a few minutes at the DMV? It’s better. But it takes hours at the DMV… So, we ask our citizens to inconvenience themselves to go the DMV, so let’s talk about guns.”

  • The Question 1 gun control ballot initiative will do nothing to make Nevadans any safer.
  • It will be subject to selective enforcement (or be paired with a gun registry scheme in the future).
  • It will cost law-abiding Nevadans time, money, and freedom.

It will be like going to the DMV!
